Harumph is a polished gem of Americana and jazz extracted from a time machine – featuring the smokey vocals of Kate Dinsmore and punctuated by a 4 piece rhythm section and melodic trumpet. A splash of innovation inside a musical culture of revivalism. The band consists of Kate Dinsmore under the musical direction of David Leach (upright bass/piano) – who performs regularly with Travis Linville, Samantha Crain, and has also appeared on The David Letterman Show with John Fullbright.
Seeing them in person, you’d almost expect your eyes to shift the picture to black and white. All original, gaining steam and just getting started, the band released its self-titled EP in 2015, recorded by Red Dirt Legend Travis Linville. After an active year of performances, the band visited 115 Recording in Norman, OK and recorded a full-length album with Grammy-nominated producer Wes Sharon and Grammy-nominated artist John Fullbright – release Feb 24, 2017.
It’s jazz-influenced, but it’s not jazz. It’s Americana and pop, but it’s not that either. Harumph has all the musicality of a studied jazz ensemble with an emphasis on the words themselves.
“What they’ve done collectively is pull on pairs of velvet boxing gloves and throw a series of knock-out punches. Dinsmore’s entrancing vocals and sultry delivery conjure a Peggy Lee fever dream. Leach’s lyrics and arrangements are sophisticated additions to the great American songbook rendered with modern style.”—The Norman Transcript
