Darden Smith is a singer-songwriter based in Austin whose thirty-year career redefines what it means to be a musician. In addition to fifteen critically acclaimed albums, Smith continues to break new ground using the craft of songwriting in education, entrepreneurship, and in service to others. He is the founder and creative director of SongwritingWith:Soldiers, a nonprofit that pairs award-winning songwriters with veterans and service members in retreat settings to craft songs about combat and the return home.
In a word, Everything.
Why? Because in a world full of cynicism and daily incidents of road rage along the electronic superhighway, these are songs of love, hope, faith and gratitude that need to be heard. Because Smith’s experiences building the non-profit organization SongwritingWith:Soldiers revealed the stark reality that a song can actually save a life. Maybe it was one of the military veterans he worked with. Maybe it was his own.
Ultimately, these songs carry a message that brings people together, that shares love in many different ways.
To that end, Smith brought together an exceptional group of friends, including Roscoe Beck (bass), Michael Ramos (keyboards), J.J. Johnson (drums), Charlie Sexton (guitar), and David Mansfield (mandolin, pedal steel and strings) and Stewart Lerman (producer).
So why make another album? Because Smith has something very relevant to say, and somebody out there (okay, everyone) might need to hear it.
